nantucket island.

“whenever you feel off, just roll up into fetal position and everything will be fine.”

during the wtf ridiculously, abnormally cold & gloomy winter days [why am i complaining whilst my warmish stay in la], it’s always wonderful to recount the warmer days: nantucket in the summer. i had been pre-warned that i’d be a fish out of water, but nbd [are those bees or wasps?]. kind of reminded me of private christian school. i had a little nantucket 101 on the old money vs. new money on the island. so opulent. so gatsby. where’s daisy and what about love?

here are some love[ly] visuals:

jfk-ack. aerial view of the island.

entrance to steps beach. there is a long path of steps between a lot of green before you reach the beach. pretty magical.

little house on the prairie?

steps beach had their beautiful collection of a million seashells, even in the waters, which proved to be quite dangerous when wrestling boys waves. regrettably, i didn’t take any boys shells for souvenir.

fourth of july weekend.

this admittedly was relaxing to be away from big city lights & loud obnoxious noises.

with this peaceful silence of only waves crashing, you almost want to think about marriage & babies…and then i turned on loud music from my spotify

you can retire here.

foie gras 3 ways: terrine, torchon, & seared. delicious!

as if i didn’t have enough duck, i had more deliciously seared duck. mid-dinner, the lobster face across from me turned into a duck as well.

festive fourth of july themed at the infamous pearl restaurant & lounge. their award-winning passionfruit cosmo was fantastic.

we just missed robert deniro & drew barrymore. what’s even cooler is that john kerry was in town for the weekend, not too far away.

goodbye nantucket! til the next time.

oscars 2014 – fame & philanthropy charity gala

everybody comes to hollywood
they wanna make it in the neighborhood
they like the smell of it in hollywood
how could it hurt you when it looks so good?

part of the excitement of the oscars is the fashion and afterparties – i was grateful to be invited to the fame & philanthropy charity gala. all i knew was that it was hosted by james cameron [yes!]. what a happy surprise to know that charlize theron was also going to make an appearance [love her work, ever since devil’s advocate #girlcrush] as well as halle berry and many of the greats.

as we ubered our way up the fancy bumper-to-bumper hills of beverly past the peaceful green vineyard and onto the tower road estate where the gala occurred, we passed the red carpet, the quick way.

the beautiful grand entrance to the main ballroom

james cameron making his inspirational speech

whether it is giving a physical helping hand, or in financial ways, or motivational speeches, or the power of the voice, social media or whatnot – whatever way you can afford to give – it is infectious and it is wonderful. i recommend it. now back to the festivities.

i found scotch, or scotch found me. our table had mostly vodka + muscat so we did some exploring.

selfie of the evening #nofilter, just the lighting from the evening’s color scheme.

ran into bff ex-colleague paris hilton [we worked together on mtv show] looking gorgeous in a sparkly golden dress. her table in the ballroom was right next to ours & yet too many ppl surrounded her so i opt out of stepping over others and ripping dresses trying to say hello

our table looked elegant [initially] but this was the mess toward the end

walk of fame, not walk of shame. [wit credit: lmo. photo credit: cute valet boy]

so it was a pleasant evening filled with the beautiful, the brave, the generous [$100k vip tables], the creatives, meeting new friends and running into old ones. but all good things come to an end, and here i waited for my valet on the sunset strip in west hollywood [with the majestic columned stairwell of my favorite japanese restaurant katana in the backdrop]. keepin it classy, even the day after. til the next black tie!

i lost my memory in hollywood
i’ve had a million visions, bad and good
there’s something in the air in hollywood
i tried to leave it but i never could

sushi roku – pasadena

sushi roku || 33 miller alley, pasadena, ca 91103 || (626) 683-3000

now here’s a festive place paired with innovation, thus their appropriately self-dubbed innovative dining group. sushi roku is one of my favorites that have been around for years along with katana [my second home before moving out to ny + it’s wagyu week til march 9th!] which continues to have consistently amazing dishes. they reinvent their menu with new additions that mix classic items with edgy flavors that really excite your palette. aside from the great food, here’s a venue you can count on to look sexy, stylish, hip and complete with beautiful decor from top to bottom with great photo opps all around – selfies in the restroom will probably be more interesting than most places. feel free to wear your best to see & be seen, and maybe fall in love – this is applicable to their whole restaurant chain.

below are some of their newest items from this pre-oscar wknd treat:

fluke topped w/kumquat, yuzu citrus, & black salt on the side

tuna tartare with yuzu guacamole, soy truffle vinaigrette and black TRUFFLES.

filet mignon wrapped asparagus – delicious [although i personally would have preferred the meat uncooked or seared] but texture was still great.

lychee imperial – cocktail choice of the night – refreshing & not overly sweet.

hot oil-seared halibut with diced chili + scallions. one of my faves.

spicy jalapeño shots for the table!

my favorites on this queen-sized platter: amaebi (live sweet shrimp) w/caviar, uni w/black salt, the special baby ika (squid), spanish mackerel

girls w/the queen platter

sweet baked shrimp over uni risotto – YUM.

ankimo – monkfish liver pâté **fave**

deep fried shrimp heads from our amaebi – you can eat their tentacles + whiskers! try it!

tuna tataki + grilled shishito peppers & eggplants – enough to feed the tables around us!

“you’re so hot[ate], especially with those gold flakes & caviar on top.”

DISH OF THE NIGHT: hotate (live scallop) topped with caviar, pink peppercorn, & gold flakes. so pretty. so delicious.

valet car keys anyone? pls drive responsibly!

if you’re still out west, don’t miss their upcoming event at toranoko [restaurant by IDG partner michael cardenas] this friday, march 7th at 5 pm: mama musubi pop-up shop with guest appearance by london’s food freak, sir nigel white showcasing d’anconia art and sharing japanese food history.
